The History of Mommi & Me Candies and Our Delicious Handmade Chocolates.
CEO and COO - Karen E. Adams-Davis
I was born June 23, 1956 to parents Cornelius V. Adams Sr. and Addie L. Adams. I am the middle child of three children. I have an older sister with whom I also share a birthday (Anita Adams Moore). I was born 15 years later with no children between us; she has always referred to me affectionately as her belated twin. I have a brother 17 months younger (Cornelius V. Adams Jr.) and we grew up as close as two peas in a pod.
My childhood was very pleasant and filled with many special moments -- holidays were very precious. Out of all the holidays, my favorite was Christmas -- and it was not because of the presents as much as the preparation for Christmas. My maternal grandmother (Elizabeth M. Chinn) from Owensboro, Kentucky would visit and stay at our home every Christmas for two to three weeks -- and the preparation for Christmas would officially begin. It became a family tradition.
My grandmother taught me how to crack a variety of nuts (hazel nuts, almonds, pecans, walnuts, Brazil nuts, and even black walnuts). The black walnuts were a real challenge. She would give us a hammer and a newspaper, and then send us outside to the sidewalk. Being a kid, this was very exciting and made us feel so useful. We would crack enough nuts that my mother could freeze some. We were allowed to eat all the nuts we wanted as long as we were cracking.
My mother loved to cook and bake for us. I had never been to a bakery for myself until I was grown. Everything we ate was homemade: breads, cakes, pies, donuts, fancy pastries, cookies, ice cream, and candy – yes, even handmade chocolates . Out of all these treats, candy was "off the chain", as my child would say today.
Just about four weeks before Christmas, my mom would start with her gourmet fudge-- I just loved licking those warm gourmet fudge pots. My brother and I would take turns anxiously awaiting the pot and the spoon -- and sometimes my older sister would be home to grab one every now and then. Mom would make divinity in all different colors with pecans on top -- and pecan rolls just like "Stuckey's" - only better. There were many varieties of candies, handmade chocolate sweets, and gormet chocolates given as gifts to family and close friends.
On December 18, 1980, my father passed away from a 40-year marriage and my mother retired her kitchen and adopted a new lifestyle. Those memories have become ghosts of Christmas past.
Then I married a wonderful man (John B. Davis) and we shared one daughter together, which I named after my sister and myself (Karen Annitta Davis) affectionately called Baby Kay.
When Baby Kay was about 18 months, I decided I wanted to recreate those childhood memories for my daughter. I called my mother about four weeks before Christmas and asked for some of the treasured family recipes for handmade chocolates, gourmet fudge, and other chocolates and sweet.
As I began to make my candy, my friends were amazed that I had this talent -- they wanted to eat and buy all my candy!
One day, a close childhood friend and I were talking and she mentioned that I had always talked about running my own business. She asked why I didn't go into the candy business. The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. And thus the seed was planted. Eventually I visualized manufacturing chocolates and sweets to an exclusive line of stores.
I talked to my mom about it and she said she would give me her 100% support. After that, I named it "Mommi & Me" -- and the rest is history!
Since then, Mommi & Me Candies has been documented and has received accolades of all kinds. Our handmade chocolates, gourmet fudge , and other chocolates and sweets continue to impress chocolates lovers everywhere!
